Thank you to all the scouts, leaders, and families who braved a cool and drizzly Memorial Day to honor those who died in service of our country. This was the first time many of the scouts have ever marched in a parade and they made us all very proud.
For our hike today we are going to take French’s Stream Trail:
The trail head is right by the rotary near the first grade soccer fields at the back of the park. There are several parking spots near the rotary and right by the trail. We will meet there at 6pm and will be back at the cars by no later than 7pm. Please dress comfortably, uniforms are optional for the hike.
Thank you to all the parents for the prompt reply. The rain over the weekend was good for the lawns but not for our hike! We’ve rescheduled for Monday, May 28th (Memorial Day) from 6-7pm with Thursday, May 31 from 6-7pm as a backup in case it rains. Hopefully we won’t need the backup date!
Since we only have an hour I think it makes sense to hike at Forge Pond Park. There is plenty of parking and several short trails that are accessible from there. The French’s Stream Trail would make the most sense as it’s a half a mile to the bridge and back and the entrance is near a parking lot:
The boys will need to carry their own gear which must contain the 6 Cub Scout essentials:
- First-aid kit: adhesive bandages, moleskin, gauze, antibiotic ointment, etc.
- Water bottle: filled and large enough to last until it can be filled again
- Flashlight: for emergency use only
- Trail food: can be made as a den activity prior to hike or campout
- Sun protection: sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater and a hat
- Whistle: also for emergency use only
We will be handing out some of the mini first aid kits that we made at the pack meeting and we will give each of the families two emergency whistles. One for the scout and one for the adult. So parents just need to be sure scouts pack water, a flashlight, sun protection, and a snack.
If you can’t make the hike you are welcome to take your scout on their own hike and sign off on the requirements. Everything is listed in the handbook.’re looking forward to the hike!
Pack 37 will be marching in Hanover’s Memorial Day Parade which starts on Monday, May 28th at 10am. All scouts should arrive at St. Mary’s by 9:30am and arrive dressed in your uniform. For those interested Troop 38 is doing a Pancake Fundraiser before the parade starting at 8am, tickets are for sale at the door. Its a great way to support other scouting groups and to let the young boys see the older boys helping out.
The parade route is a little different this year. It starts at St Marys and goes to the cemetery. In the cemetery it stops a few stops to present wreaths on graves and okay taps, then continues out and will go back to 139 and end at the Veterans Memorial. After the parade leaves the cemetery we will exit the parade and meet in the Riley Hall parking lot for Popsicles.
There are more details about the parade online:
We’re sorry to announce that due to the weather we need to cancel the bike rodeo. We are looking ahead to try to find a date that we can reschedule it to and hopefully the rain stays away next time!
